The recognition and preservation of Modern Architectural Heritage constitutes a distinct problem as a type of cultural property whose history, scope or terminology has not yet been agreed upon. Organized efforts with this aim began in early 1990s with the foundation of organizations such as DOCOMOMO International and the involvement of organizations such as the Council of Europe and UNESCO/ICOMOS. Many countries began to revise their legislation during this period as well. Although all the concerned parties agree that determination of new and additional criteria for documentation and inventorization as well as principles for preservation are necessary and should be supported with campaigns to promote the importance of this type of heritage to public administrators, owners, users and people at large, a disagreement remains concerning the time frame. This situation creates difficulties in determining the criteria and principles: Some of the international bodies including the Council of Europe, UNESCO/ICOMOS and WHC use the 19th and 20th centuries in identification. However, this type of dating produces an arbitrary period definition, which includes many variations of architectural characteristics while a stylistic classification like that proposed by DOCOMOMO could overcome such difficulties while opening the way for different time frame definitions based national/regional specifications.Similar problems arise from the criteria related to the World Heritage List, which includes a very limited number of buildings and/or sites from this time frame and style. The two determinants of the “outstanding universal value”, authenticity and integrity needs to be redefined for this type of heritage based on the “originality of the design concept” rather than that of the physical building elements, materials or details. Such an international trend could be effective in safeguarding this vulnerable heritage for future generations
