On the Asian side of İstanbul city, the residential complex of Damatrys was identified only through textual evidence. It was built by the emperor Tiberius the Second at the end of the sixth century and continued to function as a hunting lodge. The remains are monumental in nature even today, but little is known about this archaeological site.During our last visit, we collected specimens from construction materials to explain their origins. A geological map from the nearby area allowed us that mainly different types of rock material were used from the Lower Paleozoic sedimentary formations. Not well finished, solid rocks like quartzites, sandstones, limestones and some volcanic rock blocks were used mainly at the foundation walls. Upper layers consist of bricks and consolidation mortar. The detailed mineralogy shows that primitive fours was used for brick production; the absence of minerals like spinel, cristobalite, mullite and the presence of calcite give the evidence of firing temperatures not higher than 900oC
