Since 1993, Dr. C. Wayne Smith from the Conservation Research Laboratory and the Archaeological Preservation Research Laboratory at Texas A&M University has been conducting research on the use of polymer media for the stabilization and conservation of organic materials. Results of experimentsusing silicone oil with cross-linking catalization, in a variety of applications to waterlogged wood other organic materials, demonstrate minimal dimensional and physical change of the artifacts. Analysis of benefits and disadvantages of tests using this conservation method are presented here.
