The Effect of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Nursing Students’ Career Choices and Attitudes Toward the Nursing Profession: A Comparative Study

Abstract

Aim: The challenges nurses faced during the pandemic may have influenced nursing students' choices and attitudes toward the profession. This descriptive-comparative study compared the choices and attitudes toward the nursing profession of students who chose nursing profession before and during the pandemic. Material and Methods: The study was conducted at a university during the spring semester of the 2021–2022 academic year. Participants (n=365) included 201 students who chose the profession during the pandemic and 164 who chose it before the pandemic. Data were collected using the Nursing Student Data Collection Form developed by the researchers and the Attitude Scale for the Nursing Profession. Descriptive and comparative statistics were used in data analysis. Results: This study found that students who chose the nursing profession during the pandemic demonstrated more positive attitudes toward the field than those who chose it before the pandemic. Key factors influencing their choice and attitudes included voluntarily selecting nursing, prior knowledge about the profession, and having a relative who is a nurse. Conclusion: Understanding pandemics’ influence on the nursing profession can help develop strategies and professional precautions for future pandemics.
