Quality Time Within the Family for Children with Speech Sound Disorders: A Qualitative Study

Abstract

Aim: This study aimed to determine the views of mothers regarding the quality of family time spent with children with speech-sound disorders (SSD).
Material and Methods: A Case study design, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the study. The study included 20 mothers with children between the ages of five and ten who were diagnosed with SSD and who were attending special education and rehabilitation centers in Ankara. In the study, a semi-structured interview form, developed by the researchers, was used to determine the views of mothers of children with SSD on the quality of family time.
Results: Mothers stated that they scheduled both indoor and outdoor activities to spend particular time with their children. They reported that the time spent with their children was mostly focused on improving their children's speaking skills, that they planned their time together, but found it difficult to set particular lengths. It was discovered that they spent the majority of their time with all family members, particularly the father, to strengthen family bonds; that they engaged in leisure activities after completing their primary responsibilities; and that they made decisions based on the family members' circumstances and weather conditions. Mothers reported that they had moderate/high control over leisure activities, that their children participated actively in these activities, and that they offered more emotional support for their children's ability to express their feelings/thoughts during leisure activities.
Conclusion: It has provided important information about the awareness and knowledge levels of families about what leisure time activities are in families with SSD children, their contribution to developmental areas, planning, decision-making process, and the difficulties encountered.

Konuşma Sesi Bozukluğu Olan Çocukların Özelinde Aile İçi Kaliteli Zaman: Nitel Bir Çalışma

Abstract

Amaç: Araştırmada konuşma sesi bozukluğu (KSB) olan çocuklarda aile içi geçirilen zamanın kalitesine ilişkin annelerin görüşlerinin belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır.
Gereç ve Yöntemler: Nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden durum çalışma deseni kullanılmıştır. Araştırmaya Ankara ilinde özel eğitim ve rehabilitasyon merkezlerinde eğitime devam eden ve KSB tanısı almış beş-on yaş aralığında çocuğu olan 20 anne dahil edilmiştir. Araştırmacılar tarafından geliştirilen ve KSB’li çocukların annelerinin aile içi geçirilen zamanın kalitesine ilişkin görüşlerini belirlemeye yönelik uzman görüşü alınarak hazırlanan yarı yapılandırılmış Görüşme Formu kullanılmıştır.
Bulgular: Anneler, çocuklarıyla ilgilenmek amacıyla özel bir zaman ayırmak için açık ve kapalı hava etkinliklerine yer verdiğini bildirmişlerdir. Anneler, çocukları ile geçirdikleri zamanlarda en fazla konuşma becerilerini desteklediğini, çocuklarıyla kaliteli zaman konusunda planlama yaptıklarını, süre oluşturmada ise zorlandığını bildirmişlerdir. Aile bağının kuvvetlenmesi için çoğunlukla tüm aile üyeleriyle ve özellikle babayla zaman geçirdikleri, boş zaman etkinliklerini temel sorumluluklarını yerine getirdikten sonra gerçekleştirdikleri ve aile üyelerinin durumuna ve iklim koşullarına göre karar verdikleri saptanmıştır. Anneler boş zaman etkinliklerindeki kontrol düzeylerinin orta/çok olduğunu ve çocuklarının bu boş zaman etkinliklerine karşı katılım düzeylerinin yüksek olduğunu, çocuğunun boş zaman etkinliklerinde duygu/düşüncelerini ifade etmesi için duygusal becerilerini daha çok desteklediklerini bildirmiştir.
Sonuç: KSB olan çocuğu sahip ailelerde boş zaman faaliyetlerinin neler olduğu, gelişim alanlarına katkısı, planlanması, karar verme süreci ve karşılaşılan güçlüklerle ilgili ailelerin farkındalık ve bilgi düzeylerinin bilinmesi noktasında önemli ve derinlemesine bilgiler sağlamıştır.
