The effect of humor styles of employees in the medical device sector on crisis management

Yıl 2025, Cilt: 12 Sayı: 2, 298 - 309, 30.06.2025

Öz

Aim: The aim of this study is to measure the effect of humor styles on the crisis management perceptions of employees in the medical device sector and to examine whether they differ according to demographic variables.
Materials and Methods: The study was designed as a correlational and explanatory type of study. It was conducted with employees of a medical device company between January 2024 and July 2024. The population of the research consists of 225 people working in two medical device companies operating on the Anatolian side of Istanbul. It was determined that at least 142 participants should be reached by calculating the known universe. In line with the purpose of the study, the “random sampling” method was used. The sample of this study consists of 175 employees. Correlation analysis was used to determine the degree of binary relationship between variables, regression analysis and descriptive statistics were used to measure the effect. Differences according to the demographic characteristics of the participants were analyzed with independent sample t-test and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results: The research findings show that humor styles positively and significantly affect crisis management, and that humor sub-dimensions such as antecedent-focused humor, affiliative instrumental humor, and response-focused humor positively and significantly affect the pre-crisis dimension, which is one of the sub-dimensions of crisis management. Aggressive-manipulative humor, on the other hand, has no effect on crisis management. Employees aged 29 and under have a higher perception of crisis management, and differences were determined in the humor sub-dimensions and education level variable. Conclusion: The general results of the analysis show that humor styles create different levels of effects on crisis management, and that humor styles positively affect the pre-crisis and crisis periods, but do not have a significant effect in the post-crisis period. In this context, humor, which is seen as an effective crisis communication tool, is an important dynamic for employees in coping with negative situations experienced in the enterprise. It is an important power source that managers can use during a crisis and that supports the development of employees.
