Year 2025, Volume: 10 Issue: 1, 55 - 55, 30.04.2025
https://doi.org/10.25279/sak.1310025

Abstract

Objective: Hand hygiene is one of the most effective methods in reducing and preventing healthcare-associated infections. Healthcare workers and students, who are in close contact with patients, play a crucial role in preventing and controlling infections by ensuring hand hygiene. This study was carried out to examine the effect of hygienic handwashing training given to midwifery students on handwashing beliefs and hand hygiene.
Materials and Methods: The sample of this study consisted of 48 midwifery students. "Socio-Demographic Characteristics Form", "Hand Hygiene Belief Scale" and "Hand Hygiene Practice Inventory" were used to collect the research data. Permission was obtained from the ethics committee and midwifery department to carry out the study. In the realization of the study, primarily planned training on hygienic handwashing was used. The training, lecture, question-answer, demonstration, video display, and application methods were used. In the evaluation of the data of the study, the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was used to determine the compliance of percentage, mean, standard deviation, and continuous variables with normal distribution, and Friedman Multiple Comparison Test was used since it was determined in data analysis that did not show normal distribution.
Results: It was determined that the average number of daily hand washing of midwifery students was 14.08±9.12, 64.6% did not receive training on hand washing, 62.5% knew hand washing techniques, and 70.8% needed hand washing. The mean score of the Hand Hygiene Belief Scale before the students' education was 81.7±6.86, and the mean score of the Hand Hygiene Practice Inventory was 64.27±5.60. The average score of the Hand Hygiene Belief Scale, which was made right after midwifery students completed their planned education, was 84.91±6.68, the average of the Hand Hygiene Practice Inventory was 66.27±7.8, and the mean score of the Hand Hygiene Belief Scale, which was administered two weeks later, was 85.95 It was determined that the mean score of ±12.09, Hand Hygiene Practice Inventory was 67.58±4.02. Although there was an increase between the measurements for PEAI, there was no statistically significant difference (p=0.026). The analysis made for the Hand Hygiene Practice Inventory was found to be statistically positive and significantly increased the measurements made after the training (p=0.000).
Conclusion: The study determined that planned hygienic handwashing education developed midwifery students' hand hygiene beliefs and practices, and this development was not related to hand hygiene beliefs. It is necessary to emphasize the importance of the subject with repetitive training before clinical practice to transform students into hand hygiene education and behavior in the undergraduate education process.

EBELİK ÖĞRENCİLERİNE VERİLEN HİJYENİK EL YIKAMA EĞİTİMİNİN EL YIKAMA İNANÇ VE EL HİJYENİNE ETKİSİ

Year 2025, Volume: 10 Issue: 1, 55 - 55, 30.04.2025

Abstract

Bulgular: Ebelik öğrencilerinin günlük el yıkama sayısının ortalaması 14,08±9,12, %64,6’sı el yıkama ilişkin eğitim almadığı, %62,5 el yıkama tekniklerini bildikleri, %70,8’i el yıkama ihtiyaç duyduğu belirlenmiştir.
