Abstract

Abstract

Introduction: It is known that complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) practices are used in cardiovascular diseases as well as in many other fields Aim: This study was conducted to determine the use of CAM practices by nurses working in the cardiovascular field. Matherials and Methods: The study was cross-sectional and descriptive. Data were collected with the "Personal Information Form" and the "Attitudes towards Holistic Complementary and Alternative Medicine Scale" (HCAMS). Results: 301 nurses participated in the study. The mean age of the participants was 27.8±5.4 (min. 18-max. 50), and the mean working year was 5.0±5.1. The mean score of HCAMS of the participants was 29.8±6.6. 81.7% of the nurses in the study reported that they had knowledge about CAM, 41.5% reported that they got this information from books/magazines (41.5%) and social media (39.5%). While 88.4% of the nurses applied CAM to themselves, 58.1% reported that they applied CAM to their patients. A statistically significant difference was determined between the nurses’ CAM knowledge and HCAMS scores (p<0.05). It was observed that male nurses and nurses working in the cardiology clinic applied less CAM to their patients, while nurses with CAM knowledge applied more CAM to their patients (p<0.05). Conclusion and Sugestions: It is seen that nurses working in the cardiovascular field have a positive attitude towards CAM, and nurses with CAM knowledge tend to apply more CAM to their patients. Therefore, the importance of knowledge of nurses working in the cardiovascular field in terms of CAM applications, risks and benefits is increasing.
