The Importance of Reed Making in Bassoon Education
The lack of scientific research about bassoon reed has prevented the emergence of a stan-
dard bassoon reed model, which has made basson education difficult. In the developmental
process of the instrument, the individual efforts of producers to develop the instrument, chro-
nological irregularities in the process, the differences in the key mechanism and the fact that
few instruments have reached until today have hindered reed production to reach a standard. This situation has reflected on the dimensioning and bassoon reed production techniques, and
also it has made it difficult to emerge a standard bassoon reed having a similar character and
a balanced vibration until today.
Bassoon education consists of three basic issues that are linked to each other in terms of le-
arning breathing techniques, the provision of technical skills and learning bassoon production.
In this process, ignoring the reed production by providing breathing technique and technical
skill emerges as one of the biggest problems faced by interpreters in their professional lives. Therefore, it is inevitable to produce bassoon reed in order to provide efficient education and
not to decrease student motivation.
This study focuses on the importance of bassoon reed production, which is one of the main
factors in bassoon education in order to contribute to bassoon education.
