İDEAL OLANIN PEŞİNDE: YAPISAL BİR UNSUR OLARAK KİTAP NESNESİ

Öz

Bu makale, mimarlık ve kitap tasarımı bağlamında kitap nesnesinde ideal bir form elde
etme olasılıklarını tartışmaya açmayı hedefliyor. Tartışma, Le Corbusier’in Modular sistemiyle
keşfettiği ideal mimari ve uzamsal ölçeklendirmeye kitap tasarımında ulaşmanın
mümkün olup olmadığı sorusuyla başlıyor ve bu soru, kitap nesnesinin yüzyıllar boyunca
geçirdiği fiziksel dönüşümler de göz önünde bulundurularak özellikle Jan Tschichold’un kitap
tasarımındaki standartlaştırma çalışmalarıyla bağlantılı olarak tartışılıyor. Mimarlık
ve kitap tasarımı arasındaki mutlak ilişki, tasarımcıların kitabı, nesne ve sayfa tasarımı
açısından tam bir yapı olarak algıladığı, diğeri ise mimarların mimari pratiklerini kitabın
mekânında yeniden inşa etmeye çalıştıkları iki kutup üzerinden değerlendirilebilir. Dolayısıyla
makalede yalnızca Le Corbusier’in değil, aynı zamanda çağdaş mimar ve tasarımcıların
da kitap nesnesi üzerine pratikleri ve görüşleri de dikkate alınmaktadır.

IN PURSUİT OF THE IDEAL: EXAMINING THE BOOK AS A STRUCTURAL ELEMENT

Öz

This article explores the question of whether it is possible to achieve such a physical ideal in
book design as the one Le Corbusier discovered in his architectural practice with his Modular
system, which captures the ideal scale and architectural/spatial form. This question
is particularly examined in relation to Jan Tschichold’s studies of standardization in book
design, while also considering the physical transformations the book object has undergone
over the centuries. There exists an intrinsic relationship between architecture and book design.
This relationship can be evaluated in two poles: one where designers perceive the book
as a complete structure in terms of its object and page design, and another where architects
strive to reconstruct their architectural practices within the space of the book. Consequently,
the study includes perspectives not only from Le Corbusier but also from contemporary architects
and designers regarding their practices and views on the book as an object. Without
aiming to reach an absolute conclusion, this article discusses the possibilities of attaining an
ideal form in the book object within the context of architecture and book design.
