PROFESSIONAL DECISION REGRET IN THE HEALTH SECTOR: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW ON CAUSES AND CONSEQUENCES

Abstract

Regret related to career choice among healthcare professionals and students constitutes a significant career issue that affects both the quality of healthcare services and the sustainability of the sector. The aim of the study was to examine the career choice regret among health professionals and health students in Turkey. Both Turkish and English language databases 'ULAKBIM Turkish Medical Index, Turkish Psychiatry Index, Turkish Medline, Google Scholar, National Thesis Center' were searched with the words 'professional decision regret’, ‘professional regret’, ‘career regret’, ‘career decision regret’, and ‘career goal inconsistency.'. In this context, a total of 12 studies were included in the analysis, comprising five focused on health professionals and seven on students. Among health professionals, physicians and nurses were the predominant groups. In health professionals, professional decision regret decreases work motivation and satisfaction while increasing turnover intention, depression, and stress. In students, the working conditions of the chosen profession, the economic situation, and the decrease in the prestige of the profession have increased the regret of professional decisions, and as a result, may increase the possibility of depression and suicide. As the level of regret increases, interest in the profession will decrease, affecting the supply of personnel and the quality of health service delivery. In order to increase awareness of the consequences of professional decision regret in the field of health, it is recommended that research involving all health professionals should be expanded.

SAĞLIK SEKTÖRÜNDE MESLEKİ KARAR PİŞMANLIĞI: NEDENLER VE SONUÇLAR ÜZERİNE SİSTEMATİK BİR DERLEME

Abstract

Sağlık çalışanları ve bu alandaki öğrencilerin meslek seçimlerine ilişkin pişmanlık duyguları, sağlık hizmetlerinin kalitesiyle birlikte sektörün sürdürülebilirliğini de etkileyen önemli bir kariyer sorunudur. Çalışmanın amacı, Türkiye’deki sağlık profesyonellerinin ve sağlık alanında eğitim gören öğrencilerin meslek seçiminden dolayı pişman olma durumlarını incelemektir. Hem Türkçe hem de İngilizce dilinde ‘ULAKBİM Türk Tıp Dizini, Türk Psikiyatri Dizini, Türk Medline, Google Scholar, Ulusal Tez Merkezi’ veri tabanlarından ‘mesleki karar pişmanlığı’, ‘mesleki pişmanlık’, ‘kariyer pişmanlığı’, ‘kariyer karar pişmanlığı’ ve ‘kariyer hedef tutarsızlığı’ sözcükleri ile tarama yapılmıştır. Bu kapsamda 5’i sağlık profesyonellerine, 7’si ise öğrencilere yönelik toplam 12 araştırma çalışmaya dahil edilmiştir. Sağlık profesyoneli olarak hekim ve hemşire grubu ağırlıklıdır. Sağlık profesyonellerinin mesleki karar pişmanlığı, iş motivasyonu ve memnuniyeti azaltırken, işten ayrılma niyetini, depresyonu ve stresi arttırmaktadır. Öğrencilerde ise seçilen mesleğin çalışma koşulları, ekonomik durum ve mesleğin saygınlığının azalması mesleki karar pişmanlığını arttırmış, sonuç olarak da depresyon ve intihar olasılıklarını arttırabilmektedir. Pişmanlık düzeyi arttıkça mesleğe olan ilgi azalacak, personel arzını ve sağlık hizmeti sunumunun kalitesini etkileyecektir. Sağlık alanındaki mesleki karar pişmanlığının sonuçlarına dair farkındalığın artırılması için, tüm sağlık profesyonellerini kapsayan araştırmaların yaygınlaştırılması önerilmektedir.
