David The Invincible’s Commentary on Eisagoge

Abstract

Between the fifth and sixth centuries, under the leadership of Ammonius son of Hermias, a serious work of commentary on the works of Plato and Aristotle was produced in Alexandria. The teaching of philosophical commentary that began with Ammonius was continued by Simplicius, Philoponus, Olympiodorus, and his students David and Elias, whom he trained at the Alexandrian School of Philosophy, and they contributed to the formation of a tradition within the framework of a certain curriculum. Likewise, the students who fed on the tradition did not limit themselves only in Athens and Alexandria, but for various reasons they spread to Persia and Armenia and continued the Alexandrian/Hellenistic commentary tradition effectively in these regions. David the Invincible, who followed the tradition in the second half of the sixth century, is a case in point. He became famous in the fields of philosophy and logic in Athens, Alexandria and Ancient Armenia. Especially towards the end of his life, he travelled to Armenia, where he translated various works of the ancient Hellenistic heritage into Old Armenian and mediated the transmission of philosophical thought to this region. Although he wrote four commentaries in the field of logic, the most important of these is The Commentary on Porphyry’s Isagoge, which he wrote on Porphyrios’ Eisagoge. The work is important
as it is one of the first commentaries of the first period to be produced by comparing Greek and Armenian manuscripts. We have endeavored to present this study based solely on David’s text.

DAVID THE INVINCIBLE’IN EISAGOGE ŞERHİ

Abstract

Beşinci asır ve altıncı asırları arasında İskenderiye’de Ammonius son of Hermias’ın öncülüğünde başta Platon ve Aristoteles’in eserleri üzerine ciddi bir şerh çalışması ortaya konulmuştur. Ammonius ile başlayan felsefî şerh tedrisatı onunİs kenderiye Felsefe Okulunda yetiştirdiği Simplicius, Philoponus, Olympiodorus, onun öğrencisi David ve Elias gibi şarihler üzerinden bir geleneğin oluşmasında etkili olmuştur. Bu gelenek sadece Atina ve İskenderiye bölgesiyle sınırlı kalmayıp İran ve Ermenistan bölgelerine doğru yayılmıştır. David The Invincible, altıncı asrın ikinci yarısında bu geleneğe bağlı olarak bu sürecin önemli bir temsilcisidir. Kendisi. Atina, İskenderiye ve Eski Ermenistan bölgesinde felsefe ve mantık alanında şöhret bulmuştur. Özellikle ömrünün sonlarına doğru Ermenistan bölgesine gelerek burada Antik çağ Helenistik mirasının çeşitli eserlerini Eski Ermeniceye çevirerek felsefî düşünce kanalı bu bölgeye intikal etmiştir. Onun en önemli eserlerinden biri de The Commentary on Porphyry’s Isagoge’dir. Bu eser Ermenice ve Grekçe yazma nüshalar karşılaştırılarak ortaya konulan ilk dönem şerhlerinden biridir. Biz de bu şerhi inceleyerek çalışmamızı ortaya çalıştık.
