Good sternal fixation is the most important factor for preventing post-sternotomal complications. To this end, a pleathora of methods have already been developed. This study, critically reviews most widely used closure techniques, in both clinical and mechanical research, and their relative success as well as weaknesses. No decisive clinical or biomechanical agreement has been reached for the best fixation technique as yet, however steel wires currently are the preferred method among surgeons.
