Due to its effects on different segments of society and national economies, inflation becomes one of the most important problems in the world, especially in times of crisis. Inflation also has some effects on the public budget. These effects, which occur depending on the lag time and flexibility of taxes and expenditures and the inflation rate, are known as the Tanzi and Patinkin effects in the literature. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of inflation on the budget deficit in Turkey for the period 1975-2019 within the framework of Tanzi and Patinkin effects. In the study, in which methods that take into account structural breaks, the effect of inflation on the budget deficit is analyzed in a quadratic structure. In this context, Maki (2012) cointegration test, FMOLS and DOLS coefficient estimators were used in the analysis. The results obtained indicate that the relationship between inflation and budget deficit in Turkey in the mentionedperiod has a quadratic structure. Accordingly, when the inflation rate increases up to a certain point, it increases the budget deficit and then decreases it.
