Predatory Publishing and Academic Degeneration

Abstract

Predatory journals and publishers have been defined as “scammers that deceive academicians to publish in them, and quickly accept and publish submitted manuscripts for a publication fee without subjecting them to qualified peer review”. However, in present, the greatest demand for predatory journals does not come from young academicians who are being deceived and trapped, but from experienced academicians who are certainly aware of the situation. These academicians often publish in predatory journals just before an important appointment or promotion process. This situation has led to serious merit problems in academia. The international ramifications of the situation are also embarrassing for our country. Unfortunately, Turkey is ranked third in terms of countries with the highest number of publications in predatory journals. The aim of this review is therefore to contribute to the prevention of the pollution caused by publishing in predatory journals and to inform especially young academicians in the field of Sports Sciences about not being involved in this act.

Şaibeli Yayınlar ve Akademik Yozlaşma

Abstract

Şaibeli yayıncılar ve dergileri “akademisyenleri kendilerinde yayın yapmak için aldatan, gönderilen yayın taslaklarını nitelikli bir akran değerlendirmesine tabi tutmadan belirli bir ücret karşılığında hızlıca kabul ederek yayımlayan dolandırıcılar” olarak tanımlanmıştır. Ancak günümüz koşullarında şaibeli dergilere en büyük rağbet, aldatılarak tuzağa düşürülmeye çalışılan genç akademisyenlerden değil, durumun gayet farkında olan deneyimli akademik çevrelerden gelmektedir. Bu çevrelerin şaibeli yayınlarını genellikle önemli bir kadro ataması veya görevde yükselmenin hemen öncesindeki süreçte yaptıkları rapor edilmektedir. Bu durum akademide ciddi liyakat problemlerinin doğmasına neden olmuştur. Durumun uluslararası yansımaları da ülkemiz adına yüz kızartıcıdır. Ne yazıktır ki, şaibeli dergilerde en çok yayın yapılan ülkeler sıralamasında Türkiye üçüncü sıradadır. Bu derlemenin amacı, şaibeli dergilerde yayın yapma eyleminin yarattığı kirlenmenin önlenmesine katkı sağlamak ve Spor Bilimleri alanında faaliyet gösteren özellikle genç akademisyenleri bu eylemin içinde olmamaları konusunda bilgilendirmektir.
