Abstract

Youth Sport Parental Support-Questionnaire: Validity and Reliability Study

Year 2024, Volume: 35 Issue: 2, 72 - 89, 23.08.2024

Abstract

Parental support for young athletes is critical in overcoming the challenges encountered during the process and in positively contributing to the athletes' development processes. Although existing studies in the literature have examined the concept of parental support from different psychosocial dimensions, the "Youth Sport Parental Support-Questionnaire (YSPS-Q)" has been developed as a valid and reliable measurement tool by Burke et al. (2023) with a theoretical foundation in sport-specific psychological dimensions. This study aims to test the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the YSPS-Q developed by Burke et al. (2023) in young athletes. The study sample consists of 300 young athletes (mean age = 14,41 ± 1,81; 110 females and 190 males) aged between 11 and 17 from 5 different sports branches. The YSPS-Q is a Likert-type scale consisting of 18 items and four sub-dimensions. The support provided by the parents of the young athletes in their respective sports branches is evaluated in a total of 4 sub-dimensions: emotional support, informational support, autonomy support, and instrumental support. After expert opinions, it has been determined that the Turkish version has content validity. Confirmatory Factor Analysis results revealed four dimensions of the YSPS-Q Turkish version: emotional, informational, autonomy, and instrumental support, like the original scale. The YSPS-Q Turkish version is a valid and reliable measurement tool for assessing young athletes' perceptions of parental support. For researchers who want to research this area in the future, the YSPS-Q can be used as an essential measurement tool to determine the regulatory effects of different dimensions of parental support on young athletes' development processes.
