THE PERSPECTIVE OF QUR’AN ON IDOLSAND THE PSYCHOLOGY OF IDOLIZING

Abstract

Human beingsare need of believing and worshipping a superior entity in everyera, situation, and circumstances. This need has been compensated by the prophets and religions sent by the Creator. Therefore, for a believer in Allah, the concept of worshipping Allah provided peace and trust and also answered the believer’s seek forunderstanding. However, people who deviated from the belief of oneness (tawheed), have attempted to satisfy their nature of believing and worshipping in different ways throughout centuries. To establish this attempt, they worshipped spirits, natural forces, various objects, the characters of tales /mythologies/stories animals and humans. İdolizm stillexists in countries, whicharesaidto be developedscience, andcivilization in the contemporary world. In Rome, the Stones that have the painted footprints of Saint Pietro has been eroded by constant kissing and worshipping so that the stones had to be replaced by other Stones that have the same paintings. The idols that depict Prophet Jesus, Mary, orSaints, and the cows in India are stil immune from criticism. In this article, the reasons that human beings feel the need for religion and the idea of God; whether the idea of God has been formed and improved by the Creator informing and teaching its own existence or by the urge of believing in a superior power; idols and the psychology of idolizing are going to be addressed from the perspective of Qur’an and sociology.It is hoped that knowledge given about this issue leads the person to contemplate and beware
