Introduction: The transition of new graduate nurses from the student role to the nurse role is challenging. The first year of professional life is accepted as the profession's adaptation process and affects new graduates' decision to stay in a job or profession.
Aim: The study was carried out to develop a valid and reliable measurement tool for determining new graduate nurses' transition shock levels.
Method: The methodological study was conducted with 287 new graduate nurses who worked in a private university hospital in Istanbul between January and September 2018. The item pool of scale was created as 56 items through the literature review and presented to seven specialists' evaluation. The draft scale, which consisted of 46 items after content validation, was used as a data collection tool. Data were analysed using item analysis, exploratory and confirmatory analysis, and Cronbach’s alpha alpha internal consistency coefficient.
Results: The scale consisted of 23 items and four sub-dimensions due to the explanatory factor analysis. In the confirmatory factor analysis, five more items were removed from the scale. Finally, the goodness of fit indices for the model consisting of 18 items and four sub-dimensions were found at acceptable levels. Cronbach’s alpha coefficient varied between 0.80-0.89 in the sub-dimensions and was 0.92 for the scale.
Conclusion: The analyses revealed that the Nursing Transition Shock Scale was a valid and reliable measurement tool for determining new graduate nurses’ transition shock levels.
