Cognitive Maps and Spatial Perception: A Study on the METU Campus

Abstract

This study aims to examine the cognitive maps of students from the Department of City and Regional Planning at METU, focusing on how their spatial perceptions of the METU campus are shaped and how these perceptions are related to emotional contexts. The findings reveal that the most frequently highlighted locations in students' cognitive maps are the Faculty of Architecture, Devrim Stadium, and Çatı Café. These locations hold significant importance for students both physically and emotionally. While Devrim Stadium and Çatı Café are generally associated with positive emotions, the Faculty of Architecture is linked to both positive and negative emotions. Additionally, open and green spaces are perceived as areas for relaxation and socialization. Emotional differences were observed across class levels, with first-year students associating academic spaces more with stress, while fourth-year students developed a more nostalgic connection to the campus. This study demonstrates that spatial and emotional data obtained through cognitive mapping can contribute to campus design and planning processes.

Bilişsel Haritalar ve Mekân Algısı: ODTÜ Kampüsü Üzerine Bir İnceleme

Abstract

Bu çalışma, ODTÜ Şehir ve Bölge Planlama Bölümü öğrencilerinin ODTÜ kampüsüne dair bilişsel haritalarını inceleyerek, mekân algılarının nasıl şekillendiğini ve bu algıların duygusal bağlamlarla nasıl ilişkilendiğini anlamayı amaçlamaktadır. Araştırma kapsamında, öğrencilerin bilişsel haritalarında en sık vurgulanan mekânlar arasında Mimarlık Fakültesi, Devrim Stadyumu ve Çatı Kafe öne çıkmıştır. Bulgular, bu mekânların öğrenciler için hem fiziksel hem de duygusal bağlamda önemli olduğunu göstermektedir. Özellikle Devrim Stadyumu ve Çatı Kafe, genellikle olumlu duygularla ilişkilendirilirken, Mimarlık Fakültesi hem olumlu hem de olumsuz duygularla ilişkilendirilmiştir. Ayrıca, açık ve yeşil alanların öğrenciler tarafından rahatlama ve sosyalleşme mekânları olarak algılandığı görülmüştür. Sınıf seviyelerine göre duygusal bağlamda farklılıklar gözlemlenmiş, birinci sınıf öğrencilerinin akademik mekânları daha çok stresle ilişkilendirdiği, dördüncü sınıf öğrencilerinin ise kampüsle daha nostaljik bir bağ kurduğu tespit edilmiştir. Bu çalışma, bilişsel haritalama yöntemiyle elde edilen mekânsal ve duygusal verilerin, kampüs tasarımı ve planlama süreçlerine katkı sağlayabileceğini göstermektedir.
