Evaluation of Seam Performance of Knitted Fabric Combinations in Sportswear

Abstract

This study investigates the seam performance of knitted fabric combinations commonly used in sportswear. Three Raschel warp-knit mesh fabrics and one single jersey fabric were systematically combined and sewn using two stitch types (4-thread overlock and 4-needle flatlock) and two sewing threads (120 Tkt and 160 Tkt). The obtained specimens were evaluated through bursting strength tests. A three-factor general linear model (GLM) and complementary regression analysis were applied to assess the effects of stitch type, sewing thread, fabric structure, and fabric compatibility. The results revealed that fabric combination was the most significant factor influencing seam bursting strength, followed by stitch type and sewing thread. Flatlock seams and 120 Tkt threads generally provided superior performance. The M1–M1 combination achieved the highest bursting strength, highlighting the critical role of fabric compatibility. Regression analysis further demonstrated that seam durability depends on the weakest fabric within a pair and the degree of property mismatch between fabrics. Overall, the findings emphasize the importance of selecting compatible fabrics and appropriate seam parameters to enhance durability and comfort in sportswear applications.
