Following the Industrial Revolution, economic activities along with the changes in technology, urbanization, trade liberalization, and the world population growth have accelerated the environmental decadence. In particular, the use of fossil fuels as energy sources throughout the production process has increased the carbon dioxide (CO2) emission having adverse impacts on air quality. This production growth-environment dilemma has entailed a dispute on the relationship between environmental pollution and economic growth/international trade. To this end, the impacts of trade openness, population density and national income per capita on CO2 emissions per capita are analyzed using panel data method between the period 1995-2016 for totally 64 countries which are selected and categorized by the World Bank classification in terms of income levels; namely, the high-income group (25), the middle- income group (28) and the low-income group (11). According to the analysis results, a long-term relationship exists between the variables considered in global scale for all income groups. Regarding the long-run coefficients calculated by the average group estimator method, trade openness and CO2 emissions are inversely related in the high-income group countries, while they are associated positively on the global scale in the medium- and low-income group countries. Population density and CO2 emissions have a negative correlation in the high- and the medium-income groups on the global scale; while they are positively related in the low-income group countries. National income per capita and CO2 emissions are positively related on the global scale in all three income groups.
