Examination of the Effect of Exercise Programs Aimed at Correcting Neck and Shoulder Posture on Musculoskeletal Pain in Desk-Based Workers

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effect of exercise programs aimed at correcting neck and shoulder posture on musculoskeletal pain in individuals working at a desk. In Ankara, 50 volunteers between the ages of 30-50, working at a computer for at least six hours a day and complaining of neck and shoulder pain were randomly divided into exercise (n=25) and control (n=25) groups. The exercise group performed 30 minutes of stretching and strengthening exercises three times a week for 8 weeks; the control group did not perform any exercise. Pain intensity was evaluated with Visual Analog Scale (VAS). A statistically significant decrease in pain intensity was observed in the exercise group (p < 0.001), while no change was observed in the control group. The findings suggest that these exercises reduce neck and shoulder pain, improve posture and improve quality of life. Regular exercise can positively affect work efficiency by supporting musculoskeletal health.

This study was approved by the Scientific Research and Publication Ethics Committee of Isparta University of Applied Sciences with decision number 09 dated May 9, 2025. All participants were informed about the purpose and methods of the study, and written informed consent forms were obtained.
