Investigation of nursing students' educational perceptions and levels of anxiety and hopelessness: The case of the school of health
Abstract
Abstract
Purpose: The current study aims to elicit the relationship between the nursing students' educational perceptions and their levels of anxiety and hopelessness in relation to different factors.
Materials-Method: The sampling of this descriptive study consists of 270 third and fourth year students from the department of nursing of the Muğla School of Health and the students participated in the study on voluntary basis. The data of the study were collected through the administration of a questionnaire comprised of items to elicit the socio-demographic features and educational perceptions of the participants, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and Beck Hopelessness Scale in December, 2014. The collected date were analyzed by means of SPSS 22.0 (The Statistical Program for Social Sciences) program package.
Findings: It was found that majority of the sampling is comprised of women, they do not experience sleeplessness and they selected their won department willingly. Moreover, the participants' educational perceptions and state-trait anxieties are at medium level and their hopelessness is at low level. The mean anxiety and hopelessness scores of the students describing their relationship with their friends as “inadequate” are significantly different from those of the students describing it as “very good, good and medium” (p<0,05) and mean state and trait anxiety scores of the students stating that they love their profession are significantly lower (p<0,05). In addition to this, the participants having negative perception of education were found to be experiencing greater state-trait anxiety and those having positive perception of education are more hopeful. Moreover, while there is a positive, significant and medium level of relationship between unhappiness and state anxiety (r=,32,p<,01) and trait anxiety (r=,33, p<,01), there is no significant relationship with educational perception (r=-,05, p>,05).
Discussion: It can be argued that there are many factors such as gender, smoking, sleep problems, achievement level, relationships with peers, reasons for selecting the profession, satisfaction with education) affecting educational perceptions of the nursing students, the profession should be better promoted and the number of studies on the issue needs to be increased.
Key Words: Nursing, educational perception, anxiety, hopelessness
