Purpose: The purpose of the research was to determine nursing students’ opinions towards career planning.
Material-Method: The sample consisted of 345 nursing students volunteered to participate in the research who were enrolled at the Balıkesir School of Health in the period December 08-19, 2015. Written permission for the study was obtained from the Balıkesir School of Health Directorate and the students accepting to participate were asked to give the researchers their verbal consent. Data were collected using a personal information form and the Career Futures Inventory (CFI), which had been tested for validity and reliability by Kalafat (2012). The inventory consists of 25 items with three sub-scales indicating career adaptability (CA), career optimism (CO) and perceived knowledge (PK) about working environments. This study found the CFI Cronbach alpha coefficient to be .89. The data obtained were evaluated with percentages, means, the t-test, and One-way Anova analysis.
Results: The mean age of the students participating in the research was 19.8±1.6; 73.6% were female, 43.5% were first-year students, 66.7% had willingly chosen a nursing career, and 72.5% had entered nursing education as a first choice. Of the students, 67.5% were found to have a career plan, 68.4% indicated that they had no need for assistance in their career planning and of those who had a career plan, 29.6% expressed a desire to go on with graduate education. The students’ CA mean score was 41.4±6.4; their CO mean score was 39.9±6.9 and their PK mean score was 9.8± 2.1. No statistically significant differences were found between the CA and CO sub-scales and sociodemographic characteristics (p>0.05); a significant difference was found between the PK sub-scale and the factor of gender (p<0.05).
Conclusion: It was found that the nursing students had high levels of career adaptability and career optimism, but average levels of perceived knowledge about working environments.
