Abstract

The Effect of Nonpharmacological Methods on Sleep Quality in Menopausal Period: A Systematic Review of Randomized Controlled Studies Abstract

Year 2022, Volume: 13 Issue: 2, 334 - 347, 31.08.2022

Abstract

Objective: It is aimed to review randomized controlled studies to improve sleep quality in menopause and to systematically examine the findings obtained from these studies.

Method: In this study, which is a systematic review, the PRISMA protocol, which is a guide in writing the systematic review or meta-analysis research report, was used. In the study, Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane and Türk Medline databases were searched between December 2020 and March 2021. The keywords "menopause, sleep quality, randomized controlled trial" in Turkish and "menopause, sleep quality, randomized controlled trial" in English were used in the search. Randomized controlled studies, published in Turkish or English, published between January 2015 and December 2020, which address the effect of non-pharmacological methods on sleep quality in the menopausal period, with full text available, were included in this systematic review

Results: A total of 365 records were reached in the study and 13 randomized controlled studies were included as a result of the analysis. From non-pharmacological studies to improve sleep quality in menopause; While acupuncture, acupressure, telephone-based cognitive behavioral therapy, pedometer walking, bitter orange or lavender flower powder, pilates-based exercises, mindfulness meditation training, jujube seed capsule, foot bath significantly improved sleep quality in menopause, the effectiveness of chamomile extract and fennel was found to be uncertain.

Conclusion: It was concluded that non-pharmacological interventions are effective in increasing sleep quality in menopause, but objective sleep measurement techniques should be applied for future non-pharmacological studies explaining the medium and long-term effects.
