ANALYSIS OF FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE OF THE TURKISH HEALTHCARE SECTOR BEFORE AND AFTER THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted healthcare systems worldwide, both structurally and financially. This study evaluates the financial performance of the human health and social work activities sector across the pre-pandemic, pandemic, and post-pandemic periods. Using financial data from 2017–2023, the DuPont analysis method was employed to assess changes over time. Results show that the sector exhibited an unstable financial structure and notable fluctuations in return on equity before the pandemic. During the pandemic, return on equity rose markedly, and this upward trend continued afterward. The post-pandemic period also revealed more effective and efficient asset utilization, contributing to improved overall performance. These findings offer valuable insights for managers and investors, emphasizing the importance of focusing on return on equity to ensure sustainable financial stability and enhance resilience against future crises. The study’s results are expected to inform practice and contribute to the literature.

COVID-19 PANDEMİSİ ÖNCESİ VE SONRASINDA TÜRK SAĞLIK SEKTÖRÜNÜN FİNANSAL PERFORMANSININ ANALİZİ

Abstract

COVID-19 pandemisi, küresel ölçekte sağlık sistemlerini yapısal ve finansal açıdan ciddi biçimde etkilemiştir. Bu bağlamda, çalışmanın amacı insan sağlığı ve sosyal hizmet faaliyetleri sektörünün pandemi öncesi, pandemi dönemi ve pandemi sonrası finansal performansını değerlendirmektir. Analiz kapsamında, sektörün 2017-2023 yıllarına ait finansal verileri kullanılarak DuPont analizi yöntemi uygulanmıştır. Elde edilen bulgular, pandemi öncesi dönemde sektörün finansal yapısının istikrarsız bir görünüm sergilediğini ve özkaynak kârlılığında önemli dalgalanmaların yaşandığını göstermektedir. Pandemi döneminde ise sektörün özkaynak kârlılığında dikkate değer bir artış gözlenmiş, bu eğilim pandemi sonrasında da devam etmiştir. Ayrıca, pandemi sonrasında sektörün varlıklarını daha etkin ve verimli kullandığı, finansal performansında genel olarak iyileşme sağlandığı tespit edilmiştir. Bu sonuçlar, sektördeki yöneticiler ve yatırımcılar için finansal karar alma süreçlerinde önemli bilgiler sunmaktadır. Aynı zamanda, sektörde kalıcı bir finansal istikrarın sağlanabilmesi ve gelecekteki krizlere karşı dayanıklılığın artırılabilmesi açısından özkaynak kârlılığına odaklanmanın önemini vurgulamaktadır. Çalışmanın sonuçlarının, uygulayıcılara yol gösterici olması ve literatüre katkı sağlaması beklenmektedir.
