Abstract

Assessment of a child with malnutrition

Malnutrition is associated with increased morbidity and mortality in childhood. It is still an important public health problem in children living in undeveloped or developing countries. Malnutrition is also seen at high rates in long-term hospitalised children with chronic ilness. This article consists on a review of literature with the purpose of describing the main methods of nutritional assessment in order to facilitate the diagnosis of malnutrition in children and, it describes the clinical method, details procedures of anthropometry and laboratory evaluation technics used for diagnosis and classification of nutritional disorders.
