Determination of Physico-Mechanical Properties of Sage (Salvia officinalis l.) at Different Moisture Contents

Abstract

Sage (Salvia officinalis L.) is widely produced in our country which is located in the aromatic medicinal plants. Sage mechanization applications is not enough. Physico-mechanical properties of plants must be known to increase these applications. In this study, leaf and stalk dimensions, projection area, picking force, leaf-to-stalk ratio, and essential oil content of sage were determined at three different moisture contents: 8.4%, 11.5%, and 16.2% (d.b). These properties are important features for the development of threshing and separating units of sage. Most parameters increased with increasing moisture content. The essential oil content of sage decreased with increasing moisture content. Moisture content had a significant effect on the physical and mechanical properties of sage. Flower picking force of sage changed between 4.3 and 6.5 N.
