Rooting of Hackberry (Celtis australis L) Hardwood Cuttings: Effects of IBA Doses and Hackberry Types
Abstract
The objective of the study was to determine the rooting ability of Hackberry (Celtis
australis L.) hardwood cuttings. In the first year studies, hardwood cuttings of hackberry were treated
with 2, 4, 6, 8 or 10 g/l IBA and cuttings were placed into a bottom-heated system in the greenhouse.
Perlite was used as a rooting media. In the second year, rooting potential of five types of Hackberry
was examined. In the both of the studied years, the results were taken after 100 days and the rooting
rate, root number, root length and survival rate in adaptation stage were determined. Rooted cuttings
were transferred to the nursery conditions for the next year growing period and sapling height, main
stem diameter and number of leaves were determined. Maximum rooting rate and root number were
supplied with 6 g/l IBA (83.33% and 9.34 roots, respectively). Higher concentrations of IBA were
affected negatively the root growth. The rooting potential of the hackberry types showed dissimilarity
and the best rooting rate was obtained from type T5 (86.67%). Survival rates were very high on the
acclimatization stage and were dependent on the root quality. Type T5 saplings showed the best
growth (125.85 cm plant height, 18.30 mm stem diameter and 170.81 leaf number).
