Alternative Explants Source in Wheat Tissue Culture: Mature Embryo
Abstract
Wheat is the most important staple crop that has largest cultivation land among cereals.
Genetic engineering of wheat is solely based on effective regeneration system. Transgenic wheat and
cereal crops can be generated via Agrobacterium tumefaciens based transformation and particular
bombardment. An immature embryo is the most widely used explants source for this purpose. In order
to obtain immature embryo some requirements should be met and there are some factors restricting
use of immature embryos as explants. Therefore, mature embryo is an alternative explants source
which can be used for genetic transformation. This article reviewed mature embryo culture in wheat in
detail and discussed different approaches and factors affecting the mature embryo culture.
