Determination of Agricultural and Technological Properties of Safflower (Carthamus tinctorus L.) Lines Developed from Isparta Population

Abstract

Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) has been traditionally grown for vegetable oil sources in Isparta province. In this research conducted at Süleyman Demirel University, Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Field Crops in 2004 and 2005 years, agricultural and technological characteristics of Gelendost lines (Gelendost-1 and Gelendost-2) selected from Isparta safflower population were compared with control varieties (Dinçer 5-118, Yenice 5-38 and Remzibey 05). It was obtained that Gelendost lines showed in general low performance with agronomic properties but high performance with technological properties. Spiny genotypes (Remzibey 05 and Gelendost-1) gave more oil percentages than that of spineless genotypes (Dinçer 5-118, Yenice 5-38 and Gelendost- 2). Average oil content of Gelendost-1 was 26.7%, which was as high as the highest oil containing variety Remzibey 05. Gelendost lines had seed oil rich in linoleic acid and poor in oleic acid. Yenice 5-38 placed in the first rank for the highest linoleic acid content (81.6% and 81.5%, respectively) followed by Gelendost-2 (81.5% and 80.2%, respectively) in both trial years. Total tocopherol contents in safflower oil were between 131.6 mg/100 g in Dinçer 5-118 oil and 163.2 mg/100 g in Gelendost-1 oil. Tocopherol components were identified, namely, alpha-, beta-, and gammatocopherols in safflower oil. It was determined that the major tocopherol component was α- tocopherol. The highest α-tocopherol content was 149.5 mg/100 g in Remzibey 05 in 2004 and 159.6 mg/100 g in Gelendost-1 in 2005.
