Changes of Range of Motion in Lower Extremity Joints after Pre-Menopause

Yıl 2020, Cilt: 4 Sayı: 3, 94 - 103, 28.12.2020

Öz

After the pre-menopausal period, physical, mental and psychological problems in relation to age begin to appear. Especially in elderly periods, loss of strength, flexibility and width of movement increase the risk of falls and fractures. Walking is the most basic daily activity of people. Walking speed and step length decrease and step width increases with the deterioration of the mechanics of the lower extremities in the aging process. The aim of this study was to examine some lower limb joint range of motion (JROM) of sedentary women aged 50-75 years. The women who participated in the study were divided into 3 groups:50-54 years (n:18), 55-59 years (n:25), and 60-75 years (n: 21). Leighton flexometer was used to measure the right and left lower extremity joint range of motion (hip flexion, extension, abduction and knee flexion) of participants. According to the results of the analysis, a statistically significant difference was found in EHA measurements of right and left hip flexion and right hip extension of the 50-54 and 60-75 age group (P< 0.05). There is no statistical difference between age groups in the rest of measurements (p>0.05). In this study, hip joint flexion and extension angle of motion of both extremities decreased significantly between 50-54 years and 60-75 years of transition period from pre-menopausal to post-menopausal periods. There were meaningless angular decreases on left hip extension, right-left hip abduction and right - left knee flexion. Women may be advised to increase their level of physical activities and also exercise prescription which includes especially strength and flexibility practices may be suggested after pre-menopause.
