COMPARATIVE EVALUATION OF CALCIUM SODIUM PHOSPHO SILICATE DENTIFRICE AND NANO HYDROXY-APATITE DENTIFRICE IN REDUCING DENTINAL HYPERSENSITIVITY AFTER SCALING AND ROOT PLANING
Abstract
AIM – The study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of calcium sodium phosphosilicate (CSPS) toothpaste and nano hydroxy-apatite toothpaste (NHA) in managing dentin hypersensitivity after periodontal treatment.
METHODS - The present study was a double-blinded randomized controlled study. A total of 24 participants were selected after scaling and root planing and randomly divided into two groups with 12 in each. In Group I, CSPS containing dentifrice, and in Group II, NHA containing dentifrice was given. Sensitivity was examined using the Schiff cold air sensitivity scale and VAS score(tactile).
RESULTS - Initially, SAS scores were similar (p = 0.646), but Group II showed significantly lower SAS after treatment (p = 0.040), with sustained improvements at 2- and 4-week follow-ups (p = 0.012, p = 0.023). Group II had lower pain post-treatment (p = 0.025), though differences faded by 2 and 4 weeks. Both groups achieved significant reductions in SAS (Group I: p = 0.00066; Group II: p = 0.00001) and VAS scores (Group I: p = 0.0003; Group II: p = 0.0002), confirming the efficacy of both treatments. However, Group II demonstrated notably stronger early improvements in SAS, with long-term pain relief.
CONCLUSION - Toothpastes containing CSPS and NHA were effective in alleviating dentin hypersensitivity after scaling and root planing, with NHA showing slightly superior results. Therefore, NHA-based toothpaste can be considered a preferred choice for managing sensitivity following periodontal therapy.
