Color Recovery Effect of Whitening Toothpastes on Stained Composite Resins: An in Vitro Study

Abstract

Aim: This study aimed to assess the color recovery effect of whitening toothpastes with different active ingredients on stained composite resins.
Methods: Forty disc-shaped specimens (8 mm x 2 mm) were prepared from each of three different composite resins (Gradia Direct Anterior, Neo Spectra ST LV, and Estelite Sigma Quick). The specimens were immersed in coffee (Nescafe Classic, Nestlé) for 12 days then randomly distributed into 4 groups (n=10); three whitening toothpastes Colgate Optic White Expert (COW), Signal White Now (SWN), and Curaprox Black is White (CBW) and one conventional toothpaste Sensodyne Pronamel Intensive Enamel Repair Extra Fresh (SPN). The specimens were brushed for 4 and 12 minutes to simulate 1-month and 3-month of toothbrushing, respectively. Color changes (ΔE00) were measured by spectrophotometer after staining and after 1-month and 3-month of simulated toothbrushing. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance for repeated measures and Tukey's post-hoc test (p˂0.05).
Results: The color changes observed in all composite resins after 12 days of immersion in coffee surpassed the 50%:50% acceptability threshold (AT) (ΔE00:1.8). Neo Spectra ST LV showed significant coloration compared to Gradia Direct Anterior and Estelite Sigma Quick. Period of toothbrushing simulation was significant factor for the color recovery procedure. All toothpastes reduced the color change on composite resins below to the AT level after 3-month of simulated toothbrushing. COW, SWN, and CBW did not outperform SPN in removing extrinsic stains in vitro.
Conclusion: Color changes that occur over time in composite resins can be a clinical problem. All toothpastes were effective in reducing the coffee-induced discoloration.

Beyazlatıcı Diş Macunlarının Renklendirilmiş Kompozit Rezinler Üzerindeki Renk İyileştirme Etkisi: in Vitro Çalışma

Abstract

Amaç: Bu çalışmada, farklı aktif bileşenleri içeren beyazlatıcı diş macunlarının renklendirilmiş kompozit rezinler üzerindeki renk iyileştirme etkisinin değerlendirilmesi amaçlandı.
Gereç ve Yöntemler: Üç farklı kompozit rezinin (Gradia Direct Anterior, Neo Spectra ST LV ve Estelite Sigma Quick) her birinden disk şeklinde 40’ar örnek (8 mm x 2 mm) hazırlandı. Örnekler 12 gün boyunca kahvede (Nescafe Classic, Nestlé) bekletildi ardından rastgele 4 gruba (n=10) ayrıldı: üç beyazlatıcı diş macunu Colgate Optic White Expert (COW), Signal White Now (SWN) ve Curaprox Black is White (CBW) ve bir geleneksel diş macunu Sensodyne Pronamel Intensive Enamel Repair Extra Fresh (SPN). 1 aylık ve 3 aylık diş fırçalama simülasyonu için örnekler sırasıyla 4 dakika ve 12 dakika boyunca fırçalandı. Renk değişim (ΔE00) değerleri renklendirme sonrasında, 1 aylık ve 3 aylık diş fırçalama simülasyonu sonrasında spektrofotometre ile ölçüldü. Veriler tekrarlı ölçümlerde varyans analizi ve “post hoc” Tukey testi kullanılarak analiz edildi (p˂0,05).
Bulgular: Tüm kompozit rezinlerin kahvede 12 gün bekletildikten sonra renk değişimi %50:50 kabul edilebilirlik eşik değerini (ΔE00: 1,8) aştığı saptandı. Neo Spectra ST LV, Gradia Direct Anterior ve Estelite Sigma Quick ile karşılaştırıldığında anlamlı olarak daha fazla renklenme gösterdi. Rengin iyileştirilmesinde diş fırçalama simülasyonu süresi anlamlı bulundu. Tüm diş macunları, 3 aylık diş fırçalama simülasyonu sonrası kompozit rezinlerdeki renk değişimini kabul edilebilir eşik değerinin altına düşürdü. COW, SWN ve CBW dışsal lekelerin çıkarılmasında SPN'den daha iyi performans göstermedi.
Sonuçlar: Kompozit rezinlerde zamanla meydana gelen renk değişimleri klinik sorun oluşturabilir. Tüm diş macunları kahvenin neden olduğu renklenmenin azaltılmasında etkili bulunmuştur.
