Characterization of Plants in The Genus Gypsophila L. Via Molecular Genetic Methods

Abstract

One of the most important environmental and health problems of today that needs urgent solution is the metal contamina-tion of soil and water resources. As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Pb, Zn and radioactive Sr, Cs and U are known as the most important metal contaminants. Together with the heavy environmental devastations coming from anthropogenic effects, like the mine searches/processes, industrial activities, accidents (like that of Chernobil), that use minerals but also solvents, explosives and pesticides, natural biogeochemical phenomena also result in heavy destruction of large agricultural areas with elements like Cu, Zn, B and lead to large quantities of agricultural production reductions. Even when the cultivated plants are not seriously influenced from high elemental concentrations in the soil, still the need to clean up these contaminations in an interdisciplinary manner with proper technologies persists due to the possible effects on human that may come from the food chains. Valuable preliminary investigations on the microelement problems of Turkish soil has generated a suitable environments for biochem-ists, molecular biologists, soil chemists, ecologists and hydrologists, agricultural and environmental engineers and law makers to come together and utilize cost effective and innovative technologies like phytoremediation. With this study, Gypsophila plants that were, for the first time, described as boron-hyperaccumulators were brought to our laboratories from their high-B containing extreme environments, maintained and amplified with tissue propagation tech-niques in the laboratories followed by their long term maintenance in controlled glasshouse. The elemental analysis of Gyp-sophila was determined in detail and different ecotypes of Gypsophila plants, including some agronomically important acces-sions, were analysed with molecular genetics methods. Determination of plants that hyperaccumulate heavy metals and are specific to Turkey is of paramount importance in terms of conservation of genetical resources for future benefits.
