Development of Bell Pepper (Capsicum Annum L.) Lines and Cultivars Resistant to Tospovirus and Tobamovirus Using Molecular Breeding Methods

Abstract

Main limiting factors in pepper growing are pepper mild mottle virus (PMMoV), tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) and tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV), respectively. Today, there is growing need to resistance for two or more diseases and insects depending on production field and time. Present research was made to the aim of developing of virus resistant pepper lines and varieties by using the molecular markers of L3, L4 and TSW alleles which are resistant to PMMoV, TMV and TSWV diseases. For this purpose, a total of 2400 "çarli pepper" plant which were developed by marker assisted backcross and/or inbred were tested while 45 of the lines were determined as parents due to be resistant and agronomical superior. In total, 100 crossing was made by using these lines for the aim of having all of the 3 resistance alleles and 3 of crosses were identified as candidate. Present research showed that molecular and classical breeding methods can be used together to developing of resistant pepper to PMMoV, TMV and TSWV etc. diseases.
