Effect of in Ovo Bovine Colostrum Powder Administration on Embryonic Growth, Yolk Sac Resorption, and Blood Biochemical Profiles in Anadolu-T Broiler Chickens

Abstract

This study evaluated embryonic responses to in ovo administration of bovine colostrum powder (Cp) during late incubation in broiler embryos. A total of 450 fertilized Anadolu-T broiler eggs were randomly allocated to six groups as a non-injected control (NC), a saline-injected control (PC), and groups receiving 1, 2, 3, or 4 mg of Cp per egg. Injections were performed into the amniotic cavity on day 18 of incubation. Embryonic development was assessed on days 18, 19, and 20 of incubation by measuring embryo weight, yolk sac weight, gastrointestinal tract (GIT) weight and length, and selected organ weights. At hatch, chick weight, residual yolk sac weight, and blood biochemical parameters were determined. On day 19, embryo weight was higher in the Cp1 group than in the control groups, and in the Cp4 group than in PC (p<0.05), whereas no differences were observed on days 18 or 20 of incubation or in chick weight at hatch (p>0.05). Residual yolk sac weight at hatch was lower in Cp groups than in the NC group (p<0.05). In ovo Cp administration did not affect GIT development, metabolic organ weights, or hatchability (p>0.05). Total protein and globulin levels increased, and urea level decreased in Cp4 (p<0.05), while other biochemical parameters were not affected. Overall, the results suggest that bovine colostrum powder administered in ovo may modulate yolk nutrient utilization and certain biochemical responses during late embryonic development without impairing hatchability or organ development in broiler embryos.

Thanks

This study was part of an undergraduate graduation thesis and was supported by the Scientific Research Fund of Eskisehir Osmangazi University (FLO-2024-3117). We thank the Scientific Research Fund and the Department of Animal Science, Faculty of Agriculture, for their support. The colostrum powder used was obtained within the scope of the “Yaşasın Buzağılar Gülsün Yüzler” Project (TR33/22/SOGEP/U1/0001 SOGEP) implemented by the Uşak Directorate of Provincial Agriculture and Forestry. The authors express sincere thanks to the Directorate, the project coordinator, and all staff involved for their valuable contributions.
