Yaşlıların Kentsel Dönüşüm Sonrasına Yönelik Değişim Algıları: İstanbul Mahalleleri Üzerine Bir Karşılaştırma

Abstract

Bu çalışma tarihsel süreç içerisinde değişim ve dönüşüme konu olan kentlerin günümüzde karşı karşıya olduğu kentsel dönüşüm olgusunun toplumsal etkilerinin sosyokültürel değişim, yer değiştirme ve gençleşme bağlamında yaşlılar üzerindeki etkisini konu edinmektedir. Kentsel dönüşüm tarih içerisinde farklı tarzlarda uygulamaları içeren kenti dönüştürürken toplumsal düzeyde de çeşitli değişimler meydana getiren sosyal bir olgudur. Bu bağlamda kentsel dönüşüm sonrasında meydana gelen toplumsal değişim birçok disiplin gibi sosyolojinin de konusu olmuştur. Bu çalışmada kullanılan veri seti TÜBİTAK ARDEB 1001 programı kapsamına desteklenen “Kentsel Dönüşüm ve Metropolde Yaşlanmak: İstanbul Örneği” araştırmasına aittir. Çalışmada İstanbul’da ikamet eden 65 yaş üstü bireylerin kentsel dönüşümün meydana getireceği değişime dair algıları mahallelerin özelliklerine göre karşılaştırmalı analizler aracılığıyla ortaya konulmaya çalışılmaktadır. Araştırma bulgularına göre kentsel dönüşüm sonrasında meydana gelebilecek olan yer değiştirme, gençleşme ve sosyokültürel değişim henüz kentsel dönüşüm yaşanmadan yaşlı bireylerin zihninde oluşmaya başlamaktadır. Özellikle yaşlı nüfus oranı düşük, Mahalle sosyoekonomik düzeyi düşük, imar sorunu olan, göçle kurulmuş ve dönüşüm baskısı altında olan mahallelerde yaşlı bireylerin yer değiştirme eğilimlerinin daha yüksek olduğu ve gençlerin daha görünür olacağına dair bir kanaate sahip oldukları görülmektedir.

Elderly People’s Perceptions of Change after Urban Regeneration: A Comparison of Istanbul Neighborhoods

Abstract

This study investigates the social effects of urban regeneration, exploring how cities that have undergone historical changes and transformations are dealing with this phenomenon today. It attempts to reveal the effects of urban regeneration on the elderly concerning gentrification, displacement, and youthification by making comparisons at the neighborhood level. Urban renewal is a social phenomenon that transforms cities, involving different types of practices throughout history and bringing about different societal changes. In this context, the post-urban renewal social changes have gained attention from not only sociology but also several other disciplines. The data set used in this study belongs to the research project “Urban Transformation and Aging in the Metropolis: The Case of Istanbul,” which was funded by the TUBITAK ARDEB 1001 program. In this study, the perceptions of people, aged ≥65 and living in Istanbul, concerning the urban transformation were compared according to the neighborhood characteristics. The study reflects that displacement, youthification, and sociocultural changes occurring after urban renewal begin to shape the minds of the elderly before their urban renewal experience. Notably, in socioeconomically weak neighborhoods with a low elderly population, land use problems, and under the pressure of urban renewal, elderly people have a higher tendency to relocate, anticipating an increased presence of a younger demographic.
