Structural Evaluation of the February 6, 2023 Türkiye Earthquakes: Comparison of Design Codes and Recorded Seismic Demands

Abstract

Türkiye witnessed devastating earthquakes on February 6, 2023, causing widespread destruction across a wide region. In this study, the seismic impact of these events is evaluated from a structural design perspective. Specifically, the recorded Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA) values and response spectra are presented together with the elastic design acceleration parameters and design spectra prescribed in historical and current building codes. The results revealed that the ground motions experienced in the region may correspond to the highest acceleration values ever recorded. Results show that these findings may contain valuable information for refining Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Analysis (PSHA) and Ground Motion Prediction Equations (GMPEs). Since these methods rely heavily on historical seismicity and empirical strong motion data, the documentation of such extreme intensities provides a critical basis for recalibrating future hazard assessments and revising structural design parameters specified in building regulations.
