To recite the salawat when the name of the prophet is being heard
is an encouraged act according to the Sunnah and has become a strong tradition
in Islam. The act of salawat has reached far and wide in the islamic world and
has become a part of every social and individual activity as a way of
interacting with the Prophet (pbuh). The foundation of the Salawat has been
laid by the teaching of the Prophet(pbuh) that every salawat will reach and be
known to him without a matter of time or place. However there is a group of
people who have given the salawat only a symbolic meaning and have denied any
other significance this has been given to it. They argue that any other
interpretation of the salawat has lead to negligence and inertia. While this
opinion has been backed up by research through giving ‘Salat’ another meaning
than familiar like service, pursuit and responsibility, it does not encompass
the passion and the emotion that the salawat generates and produces. This paper
will look at the original meaning of the salawat as is defined by the Quran and
Sunnah, furthermore it will analyse the extend that the salawat follows the
Sunnah as it is and has been conducted, and the critique that has been made to
the way it has been implemented.
