Abstract
Abu'l-Makârim Fahruddîn Ahmed b. Tâceddin es-Saʿîd al-Hasan b. ‘Alî (d. 746/1346) who became famous as al-Jārbardī has an important place in the social, scientific, and cultural fields of the Islamic world. There is no definite information about the place of al-Jārbardī’s birth and according to some sources he was born in 664/1266. He died in Tabriz in the month of Ramadan (d. 746/1346). In this study, all of the evidenced poems mentioned in al-Jārbardī’s work named el-Muğnî fi ‘ilmi'n-nahv in the field of Arabic language and eloquence were examined. Like all language scholars, al-Jārbardī also provides evidence with poetry in his work, pursuing various purposes. It was verified that he gave quotation with the poetries as to explain some rules, inform on the use of words, explain why letters are used instead of nouns, and why words are used in other than their real form. The main purpose of this research is to examine the author’s aim in providing evidence with poetries. According to the information obtained from studies, it was found that al-Jārbardī gave evidence with poetries of different poets, using various methods to found syntax principles. Thus, the methods that the author followed for the evidencing with poetries were revealed.
