The Effect of Resonant Leadership on the Perception of Psychological Empowerment: A Study on Airline Employees

Abstract

It is very important for organizations to retain qualified employees in sectors such as civil aviation, where competition is intense and environmental and technological changes are rapid. Employees' success at work and their contribution to the organization also contribute to the performance and efficiency of the organization. This creates a competitive advantage for the organization. Therefore, psychological empowerment of employees by their leaders is a factor that increases employees' organizational contribution. This is possible if employees can easily express their ideas and criticisms, have control over the work they do, and act freely, independently and autonomously. At the same time, a resonant leadership style that is not oppressive, involves its employees in decisions and inspires its employees, leads employees to embrace their jobs. In this study, the effect of resonant leadership on airline employees' perception of psychological empowerment was examined. The obtained data were tested with structural equation modelling. According to the results of structural equation modeling, it was seen that there was a positive and significant relationship between resonant leadership and psychological empowerment. As a result, it can be said that the resonant leadership characteristics of the managers of the airline employees included in the research led to a positive increase in the psychological empowerment perceptions of these employees.

PSİKOLOJİK GÜÇLENDİRME ALGISINDA RESONANT LİDERLİĞİN ETKİSİ: HAVAYOLU ÇALIŞANLARI ÜZERİNE BİR ÇALIŞMA

Abstract

Sivil havacılık gibi rekabetin yoğun yaşandığı, çevresel ve teknolojik değişimlerin hızlı görüldüğü sektörlerde nitelikli çalışanları elde tutmak, örgütler açısından oldukça önemlidir. Çalışanların işteki başarısı ve örgüte olan katkısı, örgütün performans ve verimliliğine de katkı sağlamaktadır. Bu da örgüt açısından rekabet avantajı yaratmaktadır. Dolayısıyla çalışanların liderleri tarafından psikolojik olarak güçlendirilmeleri, çalışanların örgütsel katkısını arttıran bir unsurdur. Bu durum, çalışanların fikir ve eleştirilerini rahatlıkla söyleyebilmeleri, yaptıkları işle ilgili kontrol sahibi olmaları, özgür, bağımsız ve özerk davranabilmeleri ile mümkündür. Aynı zamanda baskıcı olmayan, çalışanlarını kararlara dahil eden ve çalışanlarına ilham veren resonant liderlik tarzı, çalışanların işlerini benimsemelerine yol açmaktadır. Bu çalışmada resonant liderliğin havayolu çalışanlarının psikolojik güçlendirme algısı üzerindeki etkisi incelenmiştir. Elde edilen veriler yapısal eşitlik modellemesi ile test edilmiştir. Yapısal eşitlik modellemesi sonucuna göre resonant liderlik ile psikolojik güçlendirme arasında pozitif yönde ve anlamlı bir ilişki olduğu görülmüştür. Sonuç olarak araştırmaya dahil olan havayolu çalışanlarının bağlı bulundukları yöneticilerinin resonant liderlik özelliklerinin, bu çalışanların psikolojik güçlendirme algılarında olumlu artışa yol açtığı söylenebilir.
