Muḥammad and His Followers in Context: The Religious Map of Late Antique Arabia, by Ilkka Lindstedt

Abstract

This review examines Ilkka Lindstedt's Muḥammad and His Followers in Context, a study that interprets early Islamic history through the epigraphic and religious landscape of Late Antique Arabia. Challenging traditional narratives of widespread paganism, the author focuses on the monotheistic milieu fostered by Jewish and Christian communities. Alongside an overview of the book's structure and its demographic contribution to the field, this review offers a complementary reading of the sociological dynamics of political integration during the Medinan period. By considering the Constitution of Medina as a document that may also be read as a gradual process, rather than only a singular legislative act, and by placing it in dialogue with the Copenhagen School's securitization theory and Ibn Khaldun's concept of 'aṣabiyyah, this review aims to offer a supplementary, multidisciplinary perspective on the work.

Abstract

Bu değerlendirme yazısı, Ilkka Lindstedt'in erken dönem İslam tarihini Geç Antik Çağ Arabistan'ının epigrafik ve dini haritası üzerinden okuyan Muḥammad and His Followers in Context adlı çalışmasını incelemektedir. Yazar, geleneksel putperestlik anlatılarına karşı çıkarak Yahudi ve Hristiyan toplulukların yarattığı monoteist bağlama odaklanmaktadır. Bu tahlil, eserin planını, epigrafik kaynak kullanımının titizliğini ve yazarın demografik/epigrafik analizlerinin alana sunduğu katkıyı ele alırken, Medine dönemindeki siyasi bütünleşmenin sosyolojik dinamiklerine dair tamamlayıcı bir okuma önermektedir. Medine Vesikası'nın tekil bir yasama eyleminden ziyade aşamalı bir süreç olarak da okunabileceği, Kopenhag Okulu'nun güvenlikleştirme teorisi ve İbn Haldun'un asabiyye kavramı çerçevesinde tartışılarak esere disiplinlerarası bir katkı sunulması hedeflenmektedir. Bu çerçevede kritik, eserin güçlü yönlerini korurken, siyer araştırmaları ile sosyal bilimler arasında bir köprü kurmayı ve Lindstedt'in bıraktığı açık soruları tartışmaya açmayı amaçlamaktadır.
