Evaluation of the Serum Zinc, Selenium, Manganese, Iron, Copper Element Levels, and Cu/Zn, Cu/Fe, Cu/Mn, Fe/Zn, Fe/Se, Fe/Mn Ratios in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients

Abstract

Objective The aim of this study was to investigate the role of serum zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) selenium (Se), manganese (Mn) and iron (Fe) levels and ratios, and their role in the pathogenesis of Type
2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). ( Sakarya Med J 2019, 9(1):38-45 )
Materials and
Methods 70 T2DM and 40 healthy subjects were included in the study. Serum Zn, Cu, Se, Mn and Fe levels of all individuals were measured by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrophotometry (ICP-OES).
Results Serum Zn, Se, Mn levels were significantly decreased in T2DM group compared to the control group (p<0.01, p<0.001, p<0.01, respectively). Cu and Fe values were significantly increased
in T2DM group compared to the control group (p<0.001 p<0.05, respectively). In the T2DM group, Cu/Zn, Cu/Se, Cu/Mn ratios were found to be statistically higher than the control group
(p<0.001 for all). Also, Fe/Zn, Fe/Se, Fe/Mn ratios were found to be statistically higher than the control group (p<0.01 for all). There were the highest positive correlations betweeen Cu and
Cu/Zn; Fe and Fe/Zn; Fe/Se and Fe/Mn; Fe/Se and Fe/Mn; Fe/Mn and Cu/Mn in T2DM group. Also, there were the highest negative correlations between Zn and Cu/ Zn; Mn and Fe/Mn, and
Cu/Mn; Se and Cu/Se.
Conclusion When we examine the findings of our study, it shows that trace elements are involved in the pathogenesis of T2DM. Further studies are needed to determine the associated mechanisms of trace
element levels and ratios in T2DM disease.

Abstract

Amaç: Çalışmamızda Tip 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) hastalarında çinko (Zn) ve
bakır (Cu) selenyum (Se), mangan (Mn) ve demir (Fe) eser elementlerinin serum
düzeyleri ve oranlarındaki olası değişimi ve hastalık
patogenezindeki rolleri araştırılmıştır.



Gereç
ve Yöntem:
Çalışmaya 70
T2DM ve 40 sağlıklı birey dahil edilmiştir. Tüm bireylere ait serum Zn, Cu, Se,
Mn ve Fe düzeyleri indüktif eşleşmiş plazma optik emisyon spektrofotometresi
(ICP-OES) ile ölçülmüştür.



Bulgular: Serum Zn, Se, Mn düzeylerinin T2DM grubunda
kontrol grubuna göre anlamlı derecede azaldığı belirlendi
(sırasıyla p<0,01, p<0,001,
p<0,01). Cu ve Fe değerlerinin ise
T2DM grubunda kontrol grubuna
göre
istatistiksel olarak anlamlı derecede arttığı belirlendi (sırasıyla p<0,001 p<0,05).
T2DM grubunda Cu/Zn, Cu/Se, Cu/Mn oranları kontrol grubundan istatistiksel
olarak daha yüksek olduğu bulundu (hepsi için p <0,001). Ayrıca, Fe/Zn,
Fe/Se, Fe/Mn oranları kontrol grubundan istatistiksel olarak daha yüksek olduğu
gözlendi (hepsi için p <0,01).



Sonuç:
Çalışmamızın bulgularını
incelediğimizde eser elementlerin T2DM patogenezinde yer aldığını
göstermektedir. T2DM hastalığında eser element seviyelerinin ve oranlarının
ilişkili mekanizmalarını belirlemek için ileri çalışmalara ihtiyaç vardır.
