Daily Life Practices of Syrian Immigrants: The Case of Mardin
Abstract
The subject of this study is the daily life practices of Syrian immigrants and so to say, their stories of “holding on” to life. The study analyzes the aforementioned practices by referring to Michel de Certeau’s concepts of strategy and tactics, which focuses on the forms of micro-resistance displayed by immigrants’ in their daily lives. The Field of study is the province of Mardin and the samples are taken from the districts of Midyat, Center (Artuklu) and Kızıltepe.
Qualitative research methods and discourse analysis were employed accordingly. Some of the data collected in this study were analyzed using themes such as Developing Dual Loyalty: Being Both a Muslim and a Syrian, Working Even If Not Rewarded for One’s Efforts, Keeping One’s Head Down and Obeying the Rules, Hiding One’s Identity, Trying to Learn Turkish, Turning the Arabic Language into an Advantage.
