Aim & Scope

Socioinformatics is an interdisciplinary field of research that examines how artificial intelligence and data engineering transform social phenomena and how social structures shape these technologies. The journal builds upon the legacy of social informatics and socio-informatics traditions; however, it shifts its focus to the questions of the era of large language models, generative artificial intelligence, and large-scale data infrastructures.

Every paper submitted to the journal must address a social science research question, theory, or method. Artificial intelligence and data engineering feature in the study either as the object of inquiry (social impacts, governance, meaning, and power relations) or as an analytical tool (computational social science method). Application studies that merely report model performance without posing a social science question, as well as descriptive studies that treat technology as a mere backdrop, are excluded from the scope.

The journal prioritizes three types of contributions: (i) Theoretical — the rethinking of social science theories in light of algorithmic systems; (ii) Empirical — original research based on digital trace data, computational methods, and field and archival studies; (iii) Methodological — issues of validity, bias, reproducibility, and research ethics in the adaptation of computational methods to the social sciences.

The scope is structured around thirteen strategic areas: (A) agriculture and food systems, (B) communication, media, and linguistic practices, (C) disasters and humanitarian crises, (D) economics, labor, and organizational systems, (E) law, regulation, and philosophy, (F) cities, space, and cultural practices, (G) health and life sciences, (H) education and knowledge production, (I) environment, climate, and sustainability, (J) art, aesthetics, and creative practices, (K) sociology and computational social science, (L) psychology and behavioral sciences, (M) political science and public policy. These fields are not mutually exclusive; interdisciplinary studies that combine multiple fields are particularly encouraged.

There are journals in the international literature that address the intersection of artificial intelligence and society; however, the empirical foundation of these publications is primarily based on Anglo-American and Western European contexts. Socioinformatics aims to address this representational gap by prioritizing empirical cases from Turkey and neighboring regions, underrepresented languages, and Global South contexts. In Turkey, research at the intersection of the social sciences and artificial intelligence is currently scattered across disciplinary journals and special issues. The journal aims to provide an institutional publishing platform for this fragmented body of literature. The languages of publication are Turkish and English, and no fees are charged to authors or readers.
