The Relationship Between Leadership Styles and Organizational Silence: A Study on Hotels

Abstract

With many things which have long been written on leadership, nowadays this subject has still kept its importance. Against the icreased competition and changing conditions, organizations now have realized the importance of leadership and they have begun attempt on this subject. Behavior of leaders has direct effect on followers and behaviors of them; and they behave according to this effect. On one hand, employees speak up about their opinions but on the other hand sometimes due to the impact of other reasons they may choose the silence. In this study; style of leadership effects on employees silence are mentioned. The population of this study comprises 4 and 5 stars hotels employees in Ankara. 450 questionnaries were distributed to 15 hotels. Survey questionnaries were implemented between 25 January and 20 February 2012. The results were achieved by 221 questionnaries which are appropriate to provide data. According to results of this study, there is a negative correlation between organizational silence and transformational leadership, and positive correlation between transactional, laissez-faire leadership and organizational silence.
