The Relationship of Personality Characteristics, Hostility and Social Support With Anxiety and Depression in Myocardial Infarction Patients

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between personality characteristics and hostility with anxiety, depression, and general psychological distress level of patients who had myocardial infarction (MI), which is a prevalent cardiovascular disease. The sample consisted of 78 myocardial infarction patients being treated in both Bursa Uludağ University Hospital and Bursa State Hospital. In order to collect data, self-report instruments were administered to MI patients. According to regression analysis, MI patients experienced psychological distress. As the level of neuroticism, a personality characteristic, increases; the level of anxiety, depression, and psychological distress increases, too. In addition, when the level of extraversion increases, the level of depression also decreases. The results revealed that personality characteristics are related to experience of psychological distress in MI patients

KİŞİLİK ÖZELLİKLERİ, HOSTİLİTE (DÜŞMANLIK, ÖFKE) VE SOSYAL DESTEĞİN MİYOKARD İNFARKTÜSÜ (KALP KRİZİ) GEÇİREN HASTALARIN KAYGI VE DEPRESYON DÜZEYLERİ İLE İLİŞKİSİ

Abstract

Bu çalışmanın amacı, kalp hastalıklarından en yaygın olarak görüleni miyokard infarktüsü (Mİ, kalp krizi) geçirmiş bireylerin, kaygı, depresyon ve genel psikolojik sıkıntı düzeyleri ile ilişkili olarak kişilik özellikleri, hostilite (düşmanlık, öfke) ve sosyal desteğin incelenmesidir. Araştırmanın örneklemini Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi Hastanesi Kardiyoloji Kliniği ve Bursa Devlet Hastanesi Kardiyoloji Servisinde tedavi gören 78 miyokard infarktüs hastası oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmada veri toplamak için katılımcılara öz bildirim ölçekleri uygulanmıştır. Regresyon analizi sonuçlarına göre Mİ geçirmiş hastalar psikolojik sıkıntılar yaşamaktadırlar. Kişilik özelliklerinden nörotisizm düzeyi artıkça kaygı, depresyon ve genel psikolojik sıkıntıların düzeyi de artmaktadır. Ayrıca dışa dönüklük düzeyi arttıkça depresyon düzeyi azalmaktadır. Sonuçlar kişilik özelliklerinin Mİ geçiren hastaların psikolojik sıkıntıları ile ilişkili olduğunu göstermiştir
