Ali Emiri Efendi’s Biography Writing As a Cultural Historian – His Sources and Methods –
Abstract
The past studies on the city monographs, one of the important elements of our cultural history, have been unfortunately limited. Although such studies, generally focused on Istanbul, partly continued on important cities like Bursa and Edirne, the other cities and regions in the boundaries of the country haven’t been efficiently subjected to these studies. This deficiency in terms of Diyarbakır, the old city of Anatolian territories, by leading him to work in this direction and collect sources and documents has caused Ali Emiri Efendi to put forward these documents and information as biographical works at an early age. In this article, by taking his own expressions into consideration, it has been tried to be put forth with what motives Ali Emiri Efendi acts, how he follows a method and what sources he makes references in these significant studies, which we do not have a part of them today and as a whole, in what aspects his work differs from other biographic studies.
