Changing Family Structure and Situation of Women with The Republic of Turkey
Abstract
Turkish society and family structure has undergone a significant change with the foundation of the republic. Generally, structure of the family was traditional, patriarchal and extended during the Ottoman period. Also women were isolated from the social, political and economic field. One of the most important institutions, that Atatürk reforms aimed to change, was family institution. Formation of the woman designed by Atatürk, had created the driving force of modern nuclear family and accelerated the transition to the modern nuclear family from extended and traditional family type. The changing structure of family is actually related with the changing position of women in family and society. Therefore, in this study the changing family structure, will be evaluated along with position of women within the family, women's rights and women's social, economic and political role.
